Airports and airlines partner on Emissions Reduction Plan feedback
26 Aug 2024
NZ Airports, the Board of Airline Representatives of New Zealand (BARNZ) and IATA have submitted jointly into the development of the government’s second Emissions Reduction Plan.
The joint submission shows that major industry players are aligned on the pathway forward. We are calling for:
- a stronger and more proactive stance from government, building on the commitments made in the 2+2 Climate/Finance discussions with Australia to explore a regional SAF industry
- consultations on low carbon liquid fuel policies to complement the consultation recently concluded in Australia
- the appointment of an Ambassador for the Aviation Transition to bring together multilateral diplomacy at ICAO for fair and equitable access to SAF, and bilateral engagement with Australia, Singapore, the UK and other partners on policy, regulation and investment
- steps to more effectively and efficiently consent renewable energy generation projects at the nation-building scale
- strategies that harness the ability of airports to serve as smart industrial and commercial hubs for decarbonisation
New Zealand has committed to 2050 and 2030 targets for aviation decarbonisation. We are in the infrastructure phase right now – it’s not a future phase we can keep waiting for. The government’s 2+2 agreement and Prime Ministers’ discussions with Australia have created a great platform to take the draft ERP to the next level.
