NZ Airports welcomes RESA reforms
NZ Airports welcomes practical reform of runway safety rules
NZ Airports welcomes the Government’s decision to introduce more flexible runway end
safety area options for regional airports.
Chief Executive Graeme Sharman says the reform recognises that a one-size-fits-all
approach does not always deliver the best outcome for airports or the communities they
serve.
“NZ Airports welcomes this practical reform and thanks Associate Transport Minister James
Meager and the Civil Aviation Authority for progressing an issue our sector has raised over a
number of years,” Mr Sharman says.
“The changes maintain a strong focus on safety while giving airports more proportionate and
practical options suited to their individual circumstances.
“For some airports, extending a runway end safety area can involve substantial cost, land
and engineering constraints. Allowing properly assessed alternatives, including shorter
RESAs where appropriate and aircraft arresting systems, can support safe and sustainable
regional air services.”
Mr Sharman says regional airports are critical infrastructure, supporting tourism, business,
emergency services and the resilience of communities across New Zealand.
“Regional airports connect people, businesses and communities. Removing unnecessary
barriers to their development will support regional growth while maintaining robust aviation
safety standards.
“This is a sensible, long-awaited reform that better aligns safety requirements with the scale
and operating circumstances of individual airports.”
